Lights, Camera & Action!

All our members will attest to the last few weeks being a whirlwind of scheduling, rehearsals, costume shopping and many sleepless nights (hence no blog updates). But at the end, our dazzling performances made it a very happy ending for two major shows in Sacramento.

TDC was featured as the main attraction at the California Telegu Samiti vArshikOtsavam on October 28th, 2007, where we depicted the elements - earth, wind, water and fire creating life. The choreography was set apart with its unique blend of kathak, Odissi, Bharatnatyam and Contemporary.'Cosmic Creation' touched the heart of the audience and the positive reviews came flooding in after our performance. That was the biggest reward for our tremendously hard working and committed troupe members. A special thanks goes out to Shomeek for brilliant lighting effects, Kanchan and Sowmiya for their help in dress and makeup and Sanjeev and Kiran for capturing some excellent still moments of the event. {Photos}

Within a week's time TDC was back in action at Vibha's Diwali celebrations on Nov 3rd, 2007. This time it was in a much smaller scale due to lack of time and auditorium capabilities. Without special lighting effects and very few rehearsals, TDC was still able to stand out from the oh so common Bollywood jhatkas and matkas. 'Unveiled' was choreographed to the tunes of the title song of 'Laaga Chunri mein Daag' with strong influences of the Kathak and contemporary styles that left the audience in an uproar. {Photos}

After much action, we have now resumed our regular training schedule. We already have three spectators of the shows eager to join us and look forward to many more. Thank you all for your support and inspiration that keeps us dancing.

Flaunting pink

This Saturday's practice session was dedicated to Breast Cancer awareness month. Here is a glimpse of a few troupe members sporting pink. The guys for some reason were unable to find any pink in their wardrobe. ;)

Dancing to the beats of Durga

Yes folks, its that time of the year again - its Durga Puja. Five days of worshiping, celebrating, socializing, feasting and of course what we do best - dancing. However far we might be from Kolkata - our hearts and minds are still filled with the puja spirits and the beats of the 'dhaakis' keep flooding our ears. During evening 'aratis' (offerings) it is customary to have a 'dhunochi' dance. Some places are even witnesses to competitions amongst spectators on who can perform the art best. So lets take off our shoes and let go this season. Lets celebrate and spread love and lets all DANCE!

Melting Pot

I've been meaning to share our recent dance experience at the California State Fair for some time now. This is the first time TDC was invited to perform there as a part of the Indo American Cultural Heritage. We had a very unique mix of performers and organizers from several different professions and it was a great opportunity to make some new friends who share the same kind of enthusiasm towards the performings arts. The very special thing about that day was the audience that had gathered around to watch us perform which affirmed our realization that the country we now live in is such a melting pot of different origins, cultures and beliefs. More heart warming was the fact that every single one enjoyed and cheered the performers on and later even congratulated us in person for our performance. To be honest, at the very beginning I was a little sceptical about performing at the fair - more so because I wasn't sure what to expect. The people out there changed it all. We at TDC are proud to be a part of this community.
